Welcome to Barrowcliff  School

welcome to our school

Welcome to Barrowcliff Community Junior School. Our school is to the north of Scarborough town centre, close to the hospital and the main road to Whitby. We are a large junior school with 200 children on roll and a staff of twenty five teachers and teaching assistants.

We want the children to enjoy their time with us and with that in mind we spend a large part of our budget on staff to ensure that children's needs can be met. We have also provided very good play facilities and many after school clubs.

We cater for working parents with our Busy Bees childcare facility, which is open from 7.45am and closes at 5.30pm. This is housed in the Infant School, which is on our site.
We expect all children to behave well, work hard and realise their potential. We expect high standards and we believe in giving extra responsibilities to children as they progress through the school.

One of the many highlights for children is the chance to take part in a week long residential visit. Y4 children visit East Barnby near Whitby whilst Y6 children have the opportunity to travel to Bewerley Park near Pateley Bridge. They take part in outdoor, adventurous activities, team building exercises and soak up the beauty of North Yorkshire.

All children are encouraged to take part in public speaking in assembly and other seasonal school productions. This gives them the confidence to speak up for themselves and take part in discussions.

We have a school council that has met regularly since 1996. Two children from each class represent their class and discuss issues of importance with Mr Evans, our headteacher.
It was their decision to build an adventure playground which is now a feature of the school. They help decide how to spend money raised by parents at the Summer Fairs and other events.

We have a  library, which has a wide selection of books that are regularly updated.

We also have a large computer suite with 30 places so that a whole class can work together.
All classrooms have interactive whiteboards which the staff and children enjoy using.

Children in all year groups learn French and we hope to include other languages in the future.
We have many after school and lunchtime clubs. These include football, rounders, netball, cricket, table tennis, knitting, sewing, computers and recorders.

If you would like to find out more about us please email the school by using the enquiry section of this website.
